Introduction
The Climate Action Lab is offering an internship for bachelor's, master's students, or recent graduates to join as a Research Assistant. This role focuses on investigating the current state, scalability, and effectiveness of carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies through modelling and simulation. Using open-source simulation software (e.g., OpenFOAM, Aspen Plus), you will model the capture processes, transport, and storage of CO₂ to assess system efficiency and scalability. This position is ideal for individuals interested in climate mitigation technologies and process engineering.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Model and simulate CCS processes, including CO₂ capture, transport, and storage.
- Analyse system efficiency, scalability, and cost-effectiveness of CCS technologies.
- Use open-source simulation software (e.g., OpenFOAM, Aspen Plus) for process simulations.
- Evaluate different scenarios for large-scale deployment of CCS systems.
- Prepare reports and presentations summarising findings from simulations and analysis.
- Collaborate on projects related to climate technology and industrial-scale CO₂ reduction.
Requirements
- Bachelor's, master's student, or recent graduate in a relevant field (Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Process Engineering).
- Interest in carbon capture technologies and climate change mitigation.
- Experience or willingness to learn process simulation software (e.g., OpenFOAM, Aspen Plus).
- Strong analytical, communication, and organisational skills.
- Familiarity with carbon capture technologies and industrial processes is a plus.
Skills and Knowledge You Gain
- Hands-on experience in modelling and simulating CCS processes.
- In-depth knowledge of CO₂ capture, transport, and storage technologies.
- Skills in using simulation software for process engineering and system design.
- Enhanced communication and teamwork skills in a research environment.
- Critical thinking for evaluating and presenting process simulation results.
